SAE J1392 Steel Sheet & Strip

What is SAE J1392?

SAE J1392 Steel

SAE J1392 is a standard set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel sheets and strips used in cars. It details the mechanical properties and chemical composition these materials need to meet to ensure they perform well in automotive applications. HSLA steels are strong yet lightweight, making them perfect for car parts that need to be durable but not too heavy. This standard helps ensure that the materials used are consistent in quality and can be formed into various shapes needed for car manufacturing.

SAE J1392 Steel Sheet & Strip

This SAE Recommended Practice covers seven levels of high strength carbon and low-alloy hot rolled sheet and strip, cold rolled sheet, and coated sheet steels. The strength is achieved through chemical composition and special processing.

SAE J1392 Chemical composition

Element Composition Range
Carbon (C) 0.02% to 0.15%
Manganese (Mn) 0.30% to 1.60%
Phosphorus (P) Maximum 0.025%
Sulfur (S) Maximum 0.025%
Silicon (Si) 0.10% to 0.60%

Mechanical Properties of SAE J1392

Property Description
Yield Strength Specifies different grades of HSLA steel with varying yield strengths, typically ranging from 210 MPa (30 ksi) to 550 MPa (80 ksi). This range allows manufacturers to choose the appropriate grade based on the specific strength requirements of the component.
Formability Despite their high strength, HSLA steels under SAE J1392 are designed to maintain good formability. This enables them to be easily shaped into complex parts without cracking or losing their mechanical properties.

SAE J1392 Steel Grade

Grade Yield Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (ksi) Tensile Strength (MPa) Tensile Strength (ksi)
040XLF 240 35 ~340 50
045XLF 310 45 ~450 65
050XLF 340 50 ~480 70
055XLF 380 55 ~520 75
060XLF 410 60 ~550 80
065XLF 450 65 ~590 8
