SAE J1392 is a standard set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel sheets and strips used in cars. It details the mechanical properties and chemical composition these materials need to meet to ensure they perform well in automotive applications. HSLA steels are strong yet lightweight, making them perfect for car parts that need to be durable but not too heavy. This standard helps ensure that the materials used are consistent in quality and can be formed into various shapes needed for car manufacturing.
This SAE Recommended Practice covers seven levels of high strength carbon and low-alloy hot rolled sheet and strip, cold rolled sheet, and coated sheet steels. The strength is achieved through chemical composition and special processing.
