Heat Treatment of Tool Steel H11

Tool Steel H11 can be effectively heat treated to achieve a balance of hardness, toughness, and other mechanical properties. The typical heat treatment involves several stages:

Annealing: Heat the steel to a specific temperature range (not specified in detail) for annealing, followed by slow cooling in a furnace to relieve internal stresses.
Hardening/Austenitizing: Heat the annealed steel to temperatures ranging from 840°F (450°C) to 1200°F (650°C) to fully austenitize it.
Quenching: Depending on the desired properties, quench the steel in oil or air after austenitizing. Oil quenching is often preferred for achieving a balance of hardness and toughness.
Tempering: Perform double tempering (two tempering cycles) at temperatures around 1020°F (550°C) for optimal hardness, toughness, yield strength, and ductility. Alternatively, higher hardness can be achieved with double tempering at 1110°F (600°C), but this may result in reduced impact toughness and lower ductility.
