Tantalum (Ta) is a heavy, dark blue-gray metal that is tough and highly resistant to corrosion. It can withstand chemicals at temperatures below 150 °C and can only be dissolved with hydrofluoric acid. Tantalum has the fourth-highest melting point of all metals and can create very thin protective layers, making it great for high-quality capacitors and tubes.
Tantalum is used to make both welded and seamless tubes and pipes. Seamless tantalum tubes and pipes are made using methods like extrusion or deep-drawing from sheet metal. Welded tantalum tubes and pipes are created by shaping a strip into a tube and then welding the joint using gas tungsten arc welding.
