What is ASTM A234 WPB?
ASTM A234 is the Standard Specification for steel pipe fittings. It includes materials made of carbon steel
and alloy steel for use at both moderate and high temperatures. It has to do with both seamless and welded
steel fittings. Steel pipe fittings are used in pipelines that carry high pressure and in the making of
pressure vessels. These fittings are made from killed steel, forgings, bars, plates, seamless or HFW
(fusion-welded) pipe products, and filler metal.
ASTM A234 covers seamless and welded carbon steel and alloy steel fittings covered by the latest revisions of
ASTM B16.9, B16.11, MSS-SP-79, MSS-SP-83, MSS-SP-95, and MSS-SP-97.
SA 234 steel pipe fittings are used in pressure piping and the making of pressure vessels for services at both
moderate and high temperatures. In this standard, the materials for fittings are killed steel, forgings, bars,
plates, and seamless or fusion-welded tubular products with filler metal.
In this standard, the specifications for elbows, tees, reducers, caps, and crosses are laid out. The ends of
these parts usually have butt welds.
Grades in ASTM A234
There are many grades in the ASTM A234 standard, like WPB, WPC, WP5, WP9, WP11, WP12, WP22, WP91, and so on.
Grade WPB is the most common material for medium and high temperature pipelines in these standards. W stands for
"weldable," P for "pressure," B for "grade b," and Y for "yield strength."
SA 234 WPB steel pipe fittings may be made from raw materials like ASTM A106 Gr.B and C steel pipe. Also from
steel plates, like ASTM A285 Gr.C, ASTM A516 Gr.70, ASTM A572, etc.
What is Steel pipe fittings
Steel pipe fittings are made of carbon or alloy steel pipe, plates, or profiles that have been shaped into a
certain shape that can be used in pipeline systems to change the flow direction or rate of fluids. Most of these
fittings are made of steel and include 45-degree or 90-degree elbows, tees, reducers (concentric or eccentric),
crosses, caps, nipples, flanges, gaskets, studs, and so on.
For industrial purposes, we usually need to change the direction of flow in pipeline systems, change the flow
rate of fluids (oil and gas, water, slurry), open or close the pipelines, etc. So, steel pipe fittings will be
used to finish these tasks.
