Electric resistance welded, flash controlled, normalised, single wall, low carbon
steel pressure tubing is covered by this specification. It is designed for use in pressure lines and
other applications that require tubing that may be bent, double flared, beaded, formed, and brazed.
Due to the probable leak path generated by the ID weld bead, material produced to this specification
is not designed for single flare applications.
SAE J356 Type-A refers to small diameter light wall tubing (usually 5/8" OD x 18Ga and less) that is
annealed "in line," as opposed to J356, where normalising is done separately. The performance
requirements for Type-A tubes are the same as those for J356 tubes, although the chemical
composition ranges for Carbon and Manganese are wider. Type-A tubes are frequently manufactured in
coil form, however they can be cut and straightened using secondary procedures.
A single strip of steel is formed into a tubular shape via electric resistance welding. Welding procedures or cutting are used to control the interior flash after welding. Ductility and homogeneous grain structure are produced through on-line annealing. Normalized electric resistance welded low carbon steel pressure tubing is designed for use as pressure lines and other applications requiring tube of a quality appropriate for bending, double flaring, beading, and brazing. Mechanical characteristics and performance standards for SAE J356 Type-A and Type-B are the same. According to SAE J356 or SAE J356 Type-A, coiled and straight material are made differently. ISO 10763 lists nominal reference working pressures for metric tubing and SAE J1065 lists nominal reference working pressures for inch tubing. During the secondary heat treat procedure, SAE J356 is produced in straight lengths. SAE J356 Type-A tubing is heat treated in-line to relieve stress.

SAE J356 Tube manufactured from a single strip of steel shaped into a tubular form by electric resistance welding. Welding techniques or cutting are used to keep the inside flash under close control after welding. On-line annealing gives the metal a uniform grain structure and makes it more flexible all around. This standard applies to normalised electric resistance-welded flash-controlled single-wall low-carbon steel pressure tubing that is meant to be used as pressure lines and in other situations where tubing that can be bent, double-flared, beaded, and brazed is needed.
