Monel Alloy 400 Pipes & Tubes

Monel 400 is a high-performance alloy renowned for its corrosion resistance and strength. Composed primarily of nickel (minimum 63%) and copper (28-34%), with additions of iron and manganese, this alloy is ideally suited for demanding industrial applications. Its exceptional resistance to seawater makes it a preferred material for marine water systems, and it also exhibits excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in freshwater.

Beyond marine applications, Monel 400 withstands highly corrosive environments, including hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids. This makes it valuable in diverse industries, from gas storage and process vessels to pulp and paper production. Its ability to perform at high temperatures also makes it a popular choice for heat exchanger piping and even the explosives industry.

Monel 400 is a solid solution alloy that can be strengthened through cold working. While its annealed state offers lower strength, hot working significantly enhances its mechanical properties. For example, a full-hard temper seamless pipe can achieve a tensile strength of 100-130 ksi, compared to 70-85 ksi in the cold-drawn annealed state.

Monel Alloy K500 Pipes & Tubes

We also supply Monel K500, a precipitation-strengthened nickel alloy. This alloy builds upon the foundation of Monel 400 by adding titanium (0.35-0.85%) and aluminum (2.3-3.15%) during the melting process.

Monel K-500 offers a compelling combination of properties. It retains the excellent corrosion resistance of Monel 400, making it suitable for similar applications involving pipes and tubes. However, the addition of titanium and aluminum allows the Monel K500 to be significantly strengthened and hardened through hot or cold working followed by heat treatment.

This enhanced strength makes Monel K500 valuable in demanding applications such as oil extraction, marine and chemical processing, seawater pumps, and the pulp and paper industry. In seawater piping systems, a common practice is to utilize both Monel 400 and Monel K-500 to leverage the best of both alloys. While Monel K500 offers superior strength, it can be more susceptible to stress-corrosion cracking in certain environments compared to Monel 400.
