Nitronic 60 Round Bars, also known as Alloy 218 or UNS S21800, are high-strength stainless steel bars made from a nickel-chromium-manganese-molybdenum alloy. This fully austenitic alloy was originally designed for high-temperature applications and offers a unique combination of excellent mechanical properties and superior corrosion resistance.
One of the standout features of Nitronic 60 is its high mechanical strength, even in its annealed form. This allows for the use of thinner sections, reducing weight and cost. The alloy also shows superior resistance to chloride pitting, stress corrosion cracking, and crevice corrosion compared to 316L stainless steel. This makes it ideal for a wide range of applications, including aerospace, food and drug processing, oil fields, petrochemical plants, surgical instruments, and chemical processing industries.

This all-purpose metal is a fully austenitic alloy originally designed for high-temperature applications. It performs well at temperatures up to 1800ºF. Nitronic 60 offers oxidation resistance similar to Type 309 stainless steel and much better than Type 304 stainless steel. This grade is best known for its excellent wear and galling resistance.
The alloy contains silicon and manganese, which help prevent wear, galling, and fretting, even in its annealed state. By cold working the material, higher strengths can be achieved while maintaining its fully austenitic structure. Unlike carbon steels and some stainless steels, this cold working does not reduce its anti-galling properties. Instead, it adds strength and hardness without significantly decreasing wear resistance.
